Buying a PayZe Card
How does PayZe Card work?
Your PayZe Card can be used to pay for purchases in New Zealand and overseas wherever UnionPay cards are accepted. The purchase amount and charges (if any) are deducted from the card’s available balance. You now have two options and a range of designs to choose from. A normal gift card which has a value when purchased, or our new reloadable card which you can top up at any time using the PayZe Wallet.
How do I get a PayZe Gift or Reloadable card?
At this stage you can only purchase PayZe cards online through our website www.payze.nz or through our partner site www.giveagiftcard.co.nz.
You can also download the PayZe Wallet which comes complete with a PayZe Reload virtual card. You can load value to the virtual card through the PayZe Wallet using Account2Account or by direct bank transfer. The PayZe virtual card can be used for QR Code payments in New Zealand and more importantly overseas in places like Mainland China where QR payments are very much a standard method.
How is my PayZe card delivered?
The PayZe card is delivered by secure courier to the recipient’s physical address you provided when placing the order. Note that we cannot deliver cards to PO boxes.
Gift Card or Reloadable - what should I choose?
Typically a gift card is purchased with a set value for a specific event such as a birthday gift, and while PayZe Gift cards may be used multiple times until the balance is used up and expires after a certain period they cannot be reloaded.
With our new PayZe Reload cards, you buy once, and in conjunction with the PayZe Mobile Wallet, you can top up from your bank account as often as you want.
No fees if you top up by Direct Bank Transfer.
How much can I load on my PayZe card?
PayZe® Gift Cards may be purchased with a one-time value from NZ$25 to NZ$1000. PayZe® Gift Cards cannot be reloaded.
PayZe® Reload Cards may be purchased online with an initial value between NZ$100 – NZ$1,000. The PayZe® Reload Card may be reloaded at any time through the Mobile Wallet with no fees using Direct bank Transfer from your bank account (allow at least 2 business days for bank transfers). Maximum reload through the Mobile Wallet is NZ$2,500 a day, with a maximum balance of NZ$10,000.
We also offer the Account2Account top up facility with a fee of 1.25%.
Note: once PayZe® Reload Card has been reloaded, you can move funds between your PayZe® virtual account and other reloadable cards in your Wallet, but you cannot transfer funds to a PayZe® Gift Card or out to a bank account or another cardholder.
PayZe® Reload Cards may be used at any ATM accepting UnionPay cards (charges will apply).
Are there any fees to reload my PayZe card?
The PayZe® Reload Card may be reloaded at any time through the Mobile Wallet with NO FEES using Direct Bank Transfer from your bank account (allow at least 2 business days for bank transfers). Maximum reload through the Mobile Wallet is NZ$2,500 a day, with a maximum balance at any one time of NZ$10,000.
We also offer the Account2Account top up facility with a fee of 1.25%.
Can I order multiple PayZe cards at the same time?
Yes, you can order up to 5 cards in one order with a maximum value on each card of NZ$1,000 and a maximum transaction value of NZ$5,000 (excluding additional charges such as card charges, handling, courier, and any GST). We welcome larger orders, and we offer a co-brand custom service as well. Please contact [email protected]
Can I use my PayZe Cards in China and South East Asia?
Yes, as QR Code payments are universally accepted in Mainland China, you do not even need a physical PayZe Card. Simply download the PayZe Wallet which comes complete with a virtual card account. Load funds onto the PayZe Wallet and you are ready to make payments using the PayZe QR Code. QR payments are not only welcomed in Mainland China but also many South East Asia destinations including Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Cambodia and Sri Lanka.
Can I make payments using a QR code?
Making QR payments is as easy as taking a snap! QR payment acceptance is rolling out in New Zealand and Australia with some major retail groups already accepting QR code. Be sure to download the PayZe Mobile Wallet to take advantage of QR payments.
If you are travelling overseas, QR payments are welcomed in Mainland China and many SE Asia destinations including Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Cambodia and Sri Lanka.
What is your privacy policy?
We adhere to the New Zealand Privacy guidelines. We will not disclose your personal details to anyone except to operate our prepaid card programs or as required by law. All data transmitted via the internet is encrypted. To see our Privacy Policy, click here.

What about security?
For your peace of mind, we strongly recommend that you download the PayZe Wallet. This gives you complete control over all your PayZe cards – both Gift and Reload. If a PayZe card is lost or stolen, you can simply and instantly put a card on hold within the PayZe Wallet. However, always treat PayZe Gift Cards like cash and always keep them secure. Note: You cannot transfer funds from a PayZe Gift Card.
Using the PayZe Card
Gift Card
You will need to activate your PayZe Gift card before you can use it.
Your card will be delivered to you by secure courier. Activate your card at activate.payze.nz or better still, download the PayZe Wallet from your app store. Add your card to the PayZe Wallet and you have full control over all your PayZe cards.
Do I need to have a PIN number to use the PayZe Gift Card?
For instore purchases using your PayZe Gift Card, you will need to swipe the card, select CR or CHQ/SAV, and enter your PIN if prompted. You will find the PIN number under the scratch panel on the back of the card. If you have a PayZe Reload Card, please see the next section.
Can I use my PayZe card at supermarkets?
Your PayZe card may be used at most participating major supermarkets in New Zealand. Stores are being added continuously but always check first that the store accepts UnionPay cards.
Can I use my PayZe Gift card?
Our cards can be used instore at participating retailers in New Zealand or overseas where UnionPay cards are accepted. Always check first. PayZe® Cards can be used at some participating online stores in New Zealand and overseas where UnionPay cards are accepted. However, please note that not all online stores accept PayZe® UnionPay cards. Additionally, some merchants may require a higher available balance than the total value of your purchases due to a pre-authorisation function. Your transaction may be declined if you do not have enough funds to cover both the pre-authorisation and your purchase.
Can I add my PayZe Gift card to my Apple or Google wallet?
Not yet – but we plan to introduce this functionality in the future. Stay tuned!
Can I use my PayZe Gift card to purchase fuel?
Yes, but we recommend only for payments at the counter at fuel service stations that accept UnionPay cards. “Pay at Pump” may be available – but always check first if UnionPay cards are accepted. Typically, you will need a balance of NZ$200 to use any “Pay at Pump” service even if your fuel purchase is for less than that value.
Can I make a purchase for a higher value that my available balance on my PayZe Gift card?
Yes, if the merchant accepts split payments, you will need to supplement any remaining value on the card with cash or other payment method accepted by the merchant. Note: Most online retailers cannot offer split payment on purchases.
Are there any situations where PayZe cards cannot be used?
The PayZe card cannot be used for mail or telephone orders or for gambling transactions or other banned merchants. The card cannot be used for any direct debits, recurring payments, or payment instalments. Please note that not all online stores accept PayZe® UnionPay cards. Additionally, some merchants may require a higher available balance than the total value of your purchases due to a pre-authorisation function. Your transaction may be declined if you do not have enough funds to cover both the pre-authorisation and your purchase.
Can the PayZe Gift card be used at an ATM to withdraw cash?
The PayZe Gift Cards may NOT be used at any ATM and cannot be redeemed for cash.
Can I use my PayZe card through a manual ‘zip-zap’ machine?
No. PayZe is intended for electronic transactions only.
What if the purchase I want to make is less than the remaining balance on my PayZe card?
Only the value of your purchase and charges (if any) will be deducted from the balance on the card, so you can use the card for more purchases later. No change will be given.
What happens if I need to return an item to the merchant?
Each merchant has its own policy about accepting returned items. If a merchant does accept the return of goods purchased with a prepaid card, then the merchant can process a refund transaction, and the spending power of the card is restored. However, such credits are not immediate so please check your transaction history.
Why would a payment using my PayZe card be declined?
There are several possibilities:
- the amount of the purchase exceeds the available balance
- the online merchant has enforced a pre-authorisation requirement requiring more funds than your purchase amount
- the merchant is in a blocked country
- the type of transactions is prohibited
- your card has expired
- you have entered an invalid PIN
- your card has been reported lost or stolen
- your card has been suspended
- your card has been damaged or tampered with
- the signature panel on the back of the card has not been signed
- your signature on the back of the card does not match the identification you have provided to the merchant
- the merchant does not accept UnionPay cards
How do I check my PayZe card balance?
Download the PayZe Wallet to have full control of your PayZe Cards. Alternatively, you may view online at balance.payze.nz.
Can I view my transaction history?
Download the PayZe Wallet to have full control of your PayZe Cards including view balances and transaction history. Alternatively, you may view online at balance.payze.nz
Does my PayZe Gift Card expire?
PayZe Gift Cards will expire at least 36 months after the purchase date. Your card is not valid after the expiry date. Any unused value remaining on expiry will be forfeited automatically.
What happens if there are still funds on my PayZe Gift Card when it expires?
We encourage you to spend your funds, but after the PayZe Gift Card’s expiry date, or following cancellation for non-activation, any balance will be forfeited, and the card will be declined if you try to use it.
What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?
For your peace of mind, we strongly recommend that you download the PayZe Wallet. This gives you complete control over all your PayZe cards – Gift and Reload. If a PayZe card is lost or stolen, you can simply and instantly put a card on hold within the PayZe Wallet. However, always treat PayZe Gift Cards like cash and always keep them secure as you cannot transfer funds from a PayZe Gift Card.
Why is there an initial load fee when I purchase a PayZe Gift card?

Reloadable Card
You will need to activate your PayZe Reload card before you can use it.
Your card will be delivered to you by secure courier. Activate your card at activate.payze.nz or better still, download the PayZe Wallet from your app store. Add your card to the PayZe Wallet and you have full control over all your PayZe cards.
Do I need to have a PIN number to use the PayZe Reload Card?
Your PayZe Reload Card is contactless. For instore purchases using your PayZe Reload Card, you will need to enter your PIN if your purchase is greater than the contactless PIN limit (eg. in NZ it is $200). If contactless payment is not available, you will need to use your PIN. You will find the PIN number under the scratch panel on the back of the card
How do I top up my PayZe Reload card?
The PayZe® Reload Card may be reloaded at any time through the Mobile Wallet with NO FEES using Direct Bank Transfer from your bank account (allow at least 2 business days for bank transfers). Maximum reload through the Mobile Wallet is NZ$2,500 a day, with a maximum balance of NZ$10,000.

How do I use the PayZe Reload card instore?
If you are shopping at a store that accepts UnionPay contactless payments, simply tap the card on the terminal and the payment is complete. Otherwise, insert the card and select any of CR or CHQ/SAV if prompted to do so (some stores do not require this step) then input your PIN. NOTE: For a contactless payment, you will need to enter your PIN if your purchase is greater than the contactless PIN limit (eg. in NZ it is $200).

Can I add my PayZe Reload card to my WeChat Pay or AliPay wallet?
Yes, you can. Go to your Account in the wallet and select add Bank Cards. Follow the prompts from there.
Can I use my PayZe Reload card to purchase fuel?
Yes, but we recommend only for payments at the counter at fuel service stations that accept UnionPay cards. “Pay at Pump” may be available – but always check first if UnionPay cards are accepted. Typically, you will need a balance of NZ$200 to use any “Pay at Pump” service even if your fuel purchase is for less than that value.

If you have the PayZe Wallet, you can top up your card instantly using the Account2Account reload function otherwise you will need to supplement any remaining value on the card with cash or other payment method accepted by the merchant. Note: Most online retailers cannot offer split payment on purchases.
Are there any situations where PayZe Reload cards cannot be used?

There are NO FEES for reload using Direct Bank Transfer (allow at least 2 business days for bank transfers). Once a card has been reloaded, you can move funds between your virtual PayZe account and other PayZe reloadable cards, but you cannot transfer funds out to a bank account or to another cardholder.
We also offer the Account2Account top up facility with a fee of 1.25%.
Can I transfer funds from my PayZe Reload card?
You can move funds between your PayZe digital wallet account and other PayZe reloadable cards.
You cannot transfer funds out of your PayZe Wallet to another cardholder or a bank account.
Can the PayZe Reload card be used at an ATM to withdraw cash?
The PayZe Reload card may be used at some ATMs accepting UnionPay cards. In New Zealand, the bank ATMs currently accepting PayZe UnionPay cards are Westpac; ANZ; and BNZ. Note: Charges apply for all withdrawals and balance checks via an ATM. Independent ATMs (non-bank branded) will charge an additional surcharge. Important: PayZe Gift Cards may NOT be used at any ATM.
